Five Foods that Cause Constipation

Posted on: March 21st, 2014 by closerlook

Everyone has experienced the discomfort constipation can cause. It can make one feel irritable, bloated and self-conscience. Believe it or not, the food we eat and the amount of fiber we consume every day play an important role in the proper function of our intestines. To relieve constipation try avoiding the foods listed below as much as possible.

Red Meat: Red meat alone is not a cause of constipation but it takes the place of fiber-rich options in our diet. Multiple servings of red meat per week can lead to a back-up in the GI system causing a bloated and full feeling. It is recommended to add fresh vegetables full of fiber, like broccoli or a salad, to a meal with red meat.

Caffeine: Caffeine can stimulate bowl movements, but if one is dehydrated, it can actually make one more constipated. It is recommended to drink lots of water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

Bananas: Similar to caffeine, bananas can go either way; it all depends on the ripeness of the banana. Green tinted bananas can cause constipation because there is still a considerable amount of starch, which can be hard to digest. Also, this fruit contains pectin (fiber) that draws water from the intestines toward the stool. If one is already dehydrated this can increase the problem.  On the other hand, ripe bananas are high in soluble fiber, which helps move waste through the bowels. Make sure if you eat a banana it’s a ripe one!

Frozen Meals: Because we live in such a fast pace society, frozen meals are convenient and save time. The problem with this is there is not as much nutritional value in a frozen meal as a fresh meal prepare at home. “Frozen dinners are almost always low in fiber and often high in fat,” says Tammy Lakatos, RD, CDN, CPT, a registered dietitian and certified personal trainer in New York. “Also, they are usually high in sodium, which ties up water to dilute the salt, keeping it from pushing waste through the body.”

Refined Carbohydrates: Cookies, crackers, cakes and pastries can all cause constipation. These foods are low in fiber and high in fat. It is better to eat fibrous fresh fruit for a sweet treat, which can help relieve constipation.

If you are experiencing persistent constipation and have tried several methods to relieve your systems with no progress, Columbus Clinical Research, located in Columbus, Ohio, is conducting a medical clinical trial to determine a new experimental drugs ability to relieve constipation.  Researchers will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a once-a-day drug, YKP10811. The Results of this study will help doctors learn more about the drug and its effects on constipation. For more information or to volunteer for this medical clinical trial click here!
